This resonated strongly with me. It reminds me of a story I read of a couple in Canada whose daughter had been brutally murdered. They were approached by another man whose daughter had also been killed - 20 years in the past. But he was still rehashing the experience over and over and it was clear he was expecting the other couple to join his "agony club." The mother instinctively rejected this, saying she did not want the tragedy that befell her daughter to define the rest of her life.

I was impressed by her wisdom and strength, even in the face of such a terrible event - just the action you describe.
